How many years have you been a freelance illustrator?

I’ve been freelancing in London for three years, and a year or so before that in San Francisco. I love the freedom and flexibility that working from home provides but I sometimes miss going into the studio and talking shop with other artists.

How reliable are you?

I always go above and beyond for a client. I try to push the boundaries of the project and exceed the client’s expectations- all within deadline. And I’ll bring a casserole over to your house if you’re feeling ill.

In a commercial sense what can your work be applied too?

No matter what type of project it is, I think a strong, interesting character is always essential in making it a success. In the States I did most of my work for animation, but in the UK it’s been mostly editorial and publishing. I love creating characters that are unique and humorous, so I think it could apply to most areas. I illustrated my first book for children earlier this year and currently working on a graphic novel for older kids- that’s what I’m really enjoying at the moment. But short term jobs, like magazine work, are always welcome.

Who are your top clients?

I’ve been lucky enough to have an array of different types of clients, from animation to publishing- Cartoon Network, Warner Bros, Penguin Books, Empire Magazine, London SouthBank Centre, and Edge Magazine.

Apart from illustration what other skills do you have?

I’m a Flash animator and have a background in design. Both are skills that compliment illustration and open doors to other projects like designing my own monster book a few years back. I also used to do a mean robot, but I’ve gotten pretty rusty over the past few years.

What’s your favourite sandwich filling?

Rice, beans, salsa, avocado, grilled chicken, lots of cheese…  basically just a good ol’ San Francisco Mission burrito!  Does that count?
